The Old Adage - "Make new friends, but keep the old - one is silver and the other gold," is definitely of one of our Wisdom of the Warrior principles that we enthusiastically encourage!
Today I fly an F16 with General Trulan Eyre, an old friend to go witness the F16 graduation of one of our new friends, Mike "Stiffler" Gommel. The fun part of the adventure is that Mike is graduating in San Antonio at Kelly AFB where I flew F16's from 1995-1998. Several of his instructors are the guys that raised me in the F16 over 13 years ago! The speaker for the graduation ceremony will be retired General Charles Duke (pictured.) General Duke is my friend Tom Duke's Dad and the last person to walk on the moon!
Certainly there will be social opportunities and of course Crossfit workouts to help mitigate the fun.
Yes, I am more disciplined about my social life than I was as a lieutenant, but there are smart ways to partake in moderation. The young guys in my squadron taught me that premium vodka soda provides a mixer with no calories or sugar and a somewhat pure alcohol that limits hangovers. Not that an overly active social like will ever help your physique - but when you do partake - be smart!
