Sumo Dunstan

LtCol Floyd "Sumo" Dunstan will fly his last flight in the F16 next week. Below is a message from Homey.

Lt Col Sumo Dunstans last official sortie as a fighter pilot is next week. I want to invite all members of the Wing, Operations Group, spouses/significant others, friends, and former Redeyes to attend this historical event.

Lt Col Floyd Dunstan has been selected and has accepted the position of Vice-Chief of the Joint Staff. Lt Col Dunstan presently serves as the 140WG Plans Officer. Lt Col Dustan is a United States Air Force Academy Graduate and the majority of his active duty time was with the USMC as an F-18 pilot. Lt Col Dunstan joined the COANG in the late nineties and served in numerous positions in the fighter squadron including squadron commander. He is a combat proven combat commander and warrior; extremely deserving of a huge turn-out from his comrades and friends. I hope everyone can make it.

will have transportation for Sumos family and friends to watch this former Marine pilot an Air Force jet for the last time. All others will be escorted out to the ramp for the 4-ship fly-by, left closed patterns, and engine shutdown festivities.

Please forward this email to anyone you think may want to attend. We look forward to seeing all of you. Please dress warmtomorrows high is 34 degrees (Fahrenheit).

When pilots completed their 100th combat mission during the Vietnam War, the ensuing final, or "fini," flight included a bottle of champagne to celebrate a safe last landing and the end of their tours. Todays Air Force continues this heritage for a pilot who is coming out of the cockpit for the last time. In addition to champagne, it is customary to hose-down the pilot after exiting the cockpit for the last time. There are no exceptions to these traditionsregardless of the pilots personal desires. (Cheryl please ensure he has a dry flight suit, boxers, and socks along with a warm blanket).
