Tuesday February 12, 2008 - Periodization

Today's Wisdom of the Warrior Principle relates directly to FITNESS as well as other areas of your life. Variety can be the spice of life and your muscles definitely agree. Muscles respond very well to change. If you do the same thing all the time, your muscles adapt, you plateau and your results diminish. One of the great things about Crossfit and P90X is that there is enough variety that you are always being challenged with something new. Not allowing your muscles to fully adapt is called PERIODIZATION (see link here.)

Today I was privileged to be joined in a crossfit workout at the squadron gym by Captain Tom "Treadmill" Kelly and baby Second Lieutenant James Edwards. Both are in great shape - - Tom possesses one of the strongest bench presses I know - - but their bodies were not familiar with the pacing and endurance of crossfit. The BURPEES were humbling to say the least. My hats off to these warriors. They did great for their first Crossfit intro (pictured.)

In the air today I experienced some periodization myself. One of the things I love about the F16 is that is the consummate MULTI-ROLE fighter. In Iraq we primarily performed a precision attack close air support mission in direct support of ground forces. Since I have been back at Buckley, I have flown several air to air missions where we exclusively fight over airplanes. Today we went to the bombing range and dropped old fashioned unguided training bombs out of diving deliveries. The bombs are called BDU33's and are definitely OLD SCHOOL. BLUE Bombs indicate training munitions. They do include and explosive charge and put off a fair amount of smoke so they can be scored by the range tower. For being a little rusty, Conk, Kojak, and myself kept all of those little blue babies very close to the intended targets - - and had a great time doing it! Pictured "pre-flighting" BDU33's.
