Wednesday July 29, 2009 - Run 10K

Now that I'm back in the good ole USA I will be teaching the merit of closely following and adhering to the CROSSFIT WOD (workout of the day) as posted on the http://www.crossfit.com/ site.
We are all guilty of only performing the WOD's that are appealing to us and it is a huge mistake. Without realizing it, the Crossfit WOD is deliberately programmed to target the three metabolic pathways for energy:
+ The first, the phosphagen pathway, provides the bulk of energy used in highest-powered activities, those that last less than ten seconds.
+ The second, the glycolytic pathway, dominates moderate-powered activities, those that last up to several minutes.
+ The third, the oxidative pathway provides energy for low-powered activities, those that last in excess of several minutes.
This is a complex way to look at the true value of "CARDIO." I frequently get questioned regarding cardio as it relates to Crossfit. We do have some CARDIO days, reference today's 10K run, but Crossfit greatly favors the diverse benefits of anaerobic training. Here is why:
Cardio results: burns calories, aerobic conditioning, burns muscle, decreases power performance
Anaerobic: burns far grater calories, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, builds muscle, aids power performance in all sports.
If I have to spell it out: while there are some benefits of low intensity/long duration cardio, they pale in comparison to the overreaching benefits of anaerobic training. Stick with the Crossfit WOD and you will get an occasional traditional cardio day. You will be surprised how well conditioned you become from the anaerobic training days!
